Firstly,
thank you very much for taking the time to read this page. It
is much appreciated.
1)
So,
why have these 'Guidelines' anyway?
2)
What
are the guidelines?
3)
Is
there anything else I can do to avoid seeing spoilers myself?
1)
So, why have these 'Guidelines' anyway?
Why is
it considered necessary by some of you to have posting guidelines?
Usenet is free for anyone to post what they like.
Sadly,
not everyone actually has been able to obtain Ultima 9 yet.
Others have managed to get the game itself, but have yet to
get their claws on a computer that's capable of running it.
Still more folks simply want to play their new game without
learning things about the story from the posts they read.
By following the guidelines below, you make it much easier
to avoid spoiling the fun of others who are less fortunate
than yourself, so that, like you, they can get as much enjoyment
as possible out of the game they have waited 5 years for.
Please
note that these are not Official Rules, and are not something
that you have to adhere to lest you be forever condemned to
scrub the walls of the Abyss with a toothbrush. However going
along with them will be a great boon to the people who can't
play Ultima IX: Ascension yet, or who aren't as far along
as you are.
2)
What are the guidelines?
The first
of the guidelines applies to the Subject of your post. If
you put [U9], including the square brackets, into the Subject,
it is simple for people who are filtering messages out to
set any such message to be hidden from their view.
On a related note, please don't use 'U9:', as some newsreaders
will automatically assume that any two characters followed
by a colon indicates that the post is a followup, and delete
them and add 're:' instead. This will make it harder to filter
the messages.
The second
guideline also applies to the Subject. Please don't include
details of the plot, such as 'Problem at Guardian's Wedding
to Lord British'. While some people can filter, other people
can't due to the newsreader they use, so please think of them
when writing up the header. It would also be appreciated if
you add 'Spoiler' to the subject of posts containing plot
related problems.
Examples
of Suggested Header Types:
[U9]
Spoiler - Please Help
[U9]
Comments & Questions Spoilers
The third
general guideline is to include Spoiler Space in your post
body. Before typing in something that might give away something
about the plot, add a note saying 'Spoiler Space' and then
follow it with at least 30 lines containing 1 full stop. The
full stops are added because some news readers delete empty
lines when displaying posts. Below the spoiler space, type
in the information you wish to convey, and any questions you
may have. If you are following up such a message, please don't
delete the spoiler space.
Example
Post Body:

Space Below:

.
Spoiler:
When I was supposed to give the ring to Lord British at
his wedding to the Guardian, it had vanished, so the Guardian
squashed me. Where did the ring go?
The fourth
and final guideline is in regard to replies to posts which
do not follow the other guidelines above. When making your
reply, please format your reply so that it does follow the
other guidelines. Don't flame the other poster, but feel free
to politely explain why you've made the adjustments.
3)
Is there anything else I can do to avoid seeing spoilers
myself?
In order
to give people some warning of spoilers in subjects, Musashi
Dragon is maintaining a mailing list to warn the subscribers
about such spoilers so they can filter the posts ahead of
time. If you wish to subscribe, email him at MusashiDragon@home.com.
In summary,
thanks for reading all the way down through this, and please
think about those who are watching before making your post.
Good luck with the game.
