Ultima IX: Ascension

Hythloth: The Second Age (or part at least...)

This solution of the second (and optional) portion of Dungeon Hythloth was written by Mythril Dragon, and is used with my thanks under the condition that her name not be forgotten. So let's remember it forever as we give thanks to her shall we?

Take the purple statue from the chest in the glass tunnels. Turn the valve in the room with the teleporter. Water flows out of the pipe and with it a key. This key unlocks a small box at the end of the corridor on the right side. The small lever in this box opens the wall to the next area.

You'll find a chamber with 4 divider walls and 2 locked portculli. By turning the valves on the walls, you activate white or red lights in the corridors. You must turn them on in a particular order to open the gates. Some valves turn off lights, and when a valve turns off a light, it turns its own light off too. On the left side are the white lights, the right side has red lights. The order on the left (white) side is East, North, South, then West; and on the right (red) side the order is West, North, South then East.

In the chamber on the left is a red pedestal. Walking past it you come to a long corridor half flooded with water. About halfway you see bones on the floor. Looking up you see a hole in the ceiling. Remember the hole and it's marker for now. Walking onward, you come to a large room. You're standing on a bridge, jump down. There is a small tunnel here, but you can't fit in it, nor can you climb back up. Under the bridge is a birdbath. Drink from it. Now why is the room getting bigger? Feeling a bit like Alice, you can now fit in the tunnel and turn the valve inside, you'll hear a slamming sound but the valve won't turn. Return to the room that is now filling with water and a few VERY BIG fish. Hightail it up the bridge before you become a snack. When you exit the room, you return to your normal size again.

The corridor is now fully flooded, allowing you to swim into the hole in the ceiling. Climb up and kill the spider, then follow the corridor to a large room with stone blocks on the walls at different heights. The 4 valves by the entrance move those blocks. A 5th valve is in the central part of the room to your right. Move the blocks so you can reach that one. Climb up to it and turn it to move a block to the exit, then climb and jump your way to there. On the floor beneath the blocks is a broadsword hidden in a pile of bones.

Follow the corridor. On your right you'll find another pit. Jump down (on top of a spider) and move on to the east. In the next room is a winch and a blue statue is hidden in a corner. Turn the winch to open another portcullis and exit the room through the rocks on the south. Turn around to grab 2 rubies, then move to the corridor on the left.

At the end of the left corridor is the purple pedestal with a glass wall behind it. Place the statue and turn around. Follow the corridor and you'll end up back to the room with the stone blocks. Continue on to the pit and drop down to the flooded corridor. It will have drained a little by now. Go back to the corridors with the lights.

Follow the corridor on the north to a pit blocked by a portcullis and an L-shaped room. At the end of the room is the blue pedestal. Place the statue to open the way to the pit.

On the other side of the L-shaped corridor is a pool of water. Jump in and swim underneath the floor and through a doorway. Swim up for air. Almost at the end is a hole in the ceiling. Climb onto the platform and then out of the pit. Grab the gold and move the large jug. Underneath it is a rust-colored statue. Return to the L-shaped room and from there to the newly opened pit filled with water.

Jump into the well and swim through two large chambers to another well in the south and climb out. In the chest is a mace, 2 potions (cure and heal) and some gold. Look up to find the orange statue, use gust to move it to the edge of the platform where you can grab it. Return to the first pit and climb up.

[I got stuck there and had to use the fly-cheat to get out of the pit. ~ Mythril Dragon]

[It's been reported that it is possible to drop an item on the surface of the water, then climb onto it in order to get out. ~ Paulon]

Go all the way back to the room with the orange platform, and place the statue. It will get hit by THREE bolts of lightning and the big plate at the other side of the corridor opens up. Kill the fish, jump in, and turn the little valve on the north side. Climb out again and return to the two large underwater rooms. Swim through the newly opened gate and pause for a little air.

Just beyond the bubbles is another hole in the ceiling. The room this leads to is the same one where the teleport leads to. Follow the flooded corridor until the apparent dead-end. Turn around and swim up into the tunnel. Swim straight up and breath fresh air again!

Good luck with the rest of your journey and may the virtues be with thee.

~Mythril Dragon
