Of Questions Often Asked - Ultima FAQs

This is the second page of common questions, covering those Ultimas from VI onwards, as well as The Worlds of Ultima and the Ultima Underworlds. As you might guess, the first page covered questions from Ultima I to V. Predictable am I not?

Ultima VI: THe False Prophet

The False Prophet

Help! I'm dying and there's no spell to cure poison. Ack.

Quick. Cast Dispel Magic.

An Jux Ort

Feeling any better now?

Yes thank you.

Good. Does that answer your question?

You know, there should be some way to prove who killed Quenton. What have I missed?

Alas, it is not in thy destiny to solve the murder of Quenton. Yet you may gain some satisfaction in knowing that the murderer, Michael, will be executed for his crimes at the High Court in Yew.

Is the case of the mute publican similar to this?

Unfortunately it is so.

Of the Guild of Thieves. Where is it hidden?

Within the Towne called Buccanneer's Den lies the hidden Guild, as thou dost already know. The Master is named Budo, and his lair is behind the Tavern, through a Secret Door within the Kitchen.

Worlds of Ultima I: The Savage Empire

The Savage Empire

Most problems should be covered in the solution elsewhere in this site. However two nasties spring to mind.

How do I move that giant Fabozz statue?

You need to shed a little light on the situation. You also need plenty of evidence about it, so take a few snapshots...

There's no way up to that ledge. How do I get up there to battle King Kong?

To get up high, you need to look down low.
Stop the river in it's flow.
With a grenade thou dost blow,
Down the boulder. Now lets go.

Worlds of Ultima II: Martian Dreams

Martian Dreams

Poisoned again? I know there's no spell to cure me this time. Now what?

Three ways are of use to thee. The good Doctor Blood will cure the poison and burns, while eating a blue berry will also cure you, at the expense of your coordination for a while.

The simplest method of all is to use tongs and keep radium in a lead box. Lugging radioactive isotopes around in your hands and backpack is just a trifling little bit of a health hazard.

The Towers are all fixed, but I can't work out what to enter to get them to melt the ice.

Tick tocket, tick tocket, watch ya got in your pocket?

You enter the time shown by your pocket watch, in 24 hour format, without any separators between hours and minutes.

Oh no! Now I'm not only seeing two Spectors, I'm Hearing two as well.

You stand within the Test of Falsehood, to seek the Truth that is hidden within. What is visible to the Naked Eye does not need to be of the Truth. Remember that only by Reflection upon the Truth will the illusion be shown in the Mirror of your soul.

Ultima Underworld I: The Stygian Abyss

The Stygian Abyss

Bones. There's a whole level full of them, so how do I find Garamon's bones?

The bones of Garamon are over in the southwest corner of level 8 of the Abyss. They can be distinguished by the pile of runes and other magical paraphenalia lying around them.

Alternately, pick up bones and stack them like coins. Garamon's bones will not join the pile.

Ultima VII: The Black Gate

The Black Gate

How do I get into the room in the Northeast tower of Castle Britannia? I want all those goodies. Drool...

The lever is on the floor below. Try moving objects in the secret passages. Work is good for the soul, as the kitchen servants can confirm.

How do I keep that prick out of my backside?

Don't give your party members non-enchanted missile weapons - Iolo in particular is a hazard, especially with a triple crossbow.

Please tell me! Where is the key to get at the Hoe of Destruction?

The key is in a dead fish under a bush on the shore of Loch Lake. There is only a part of the Body (it does NOT say trout or fish) visible, just to the left of a piece of garbage which is the same green colour as the fish. You need to double click on the fish to open it and get the key.

Just to be more helpful, the fish is at 2N, 48E, or if you want to teleport or are just clicking the mouse at the top left of the screen, the Hex Coordinates are X 587, Y 458, Z 1. The fish is a couple of paces to the right of this point.

I always found it saved time just to to blow the door down. I recommend using a powder keg, as my breath just wasn't up to the huffing and puffing required.

There's no way into the Tetrahedron. I've got the enchanted Ethereal Ring, but I just can't get in.

Remember reading Lord of the Rings? The One Ring only enabled it's wearer to be invisible when worn, but it still affected him at other times. Wear it to enter.

The Inevitable, Common, Always Asked, and Actually Never Seen by Myself Question: Where is the Talisman of Truth?

The obvious answer is to say 'Read the rgcu.* FAQ', but that's a little too obvious for me. Walk across the chamber near the beginning of the Test of Truth and continue down the passage until you see a leather hood lying on the ground. Go north, through the illusionary wall, and simply follow the invisible path to the real Talisman.

How do I get past the metal door in the prison on the Isle of the Avatar?

It depends. If you've walked past it and are shut into the prison, you need to use another exit. The lever that opens the secret door out is under a barrel in one of the cells.

If you haven't got passed it into the cells, then you've triggered it earlier by flying over the door on the carpet. In this case, you HAVE to cheat. Save, then quit and reload using the Ye Olde 'Ultima ABCD<Alt255>' spell. Then press F2, turn on the hackmover, and get rid of the door.

I've found this throne. I've sat on it time and again, but nothing happens. I'm at a dead end.

I hope you wiped up and washed your hands afterwards. ;-) Watch the candles as you sit on the Throne of Changes and are teleported. One of the locations has a passage leading north from the eastern end of the north wall. At the end of the passage is another Throne, this one with an Ankh. Sit on this Throne of Virtue, and the Throne of Chaos will give you a new location. Beware of the Liche though. He's got a way with Deathbolts.

Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds

Labyrinth of Worlds

How do I get into those locked chests in Castle Britannia?

You want to breech the privacy of your noble allies? Shame.

For the record though, cast Unlock Magic in another world, and then return through the Gem and go to the chest without releasing the spell.

What of the Trilkhai? Were they really the Kilrathi? How do I find out?

Thou must seek out the most renowned traders of information, for only their resources can assist thee. Or you can read on down...

Thus sayth the Wisps within the Blue Region of the Void:
The Trilkhai were once a powerful race of anthropomorphic "felines". Since their catastrophic "loss" to a group of humanoids, they have since devolved "past" the point of "tool using"
And there you have it. The Trilkhai may or may not have been the Kilrathi (the anagram is pretty suggestive though), but their legends are indeed true - they fought humans long ago.

Lord British's letter on the Serpent Isle talks about a Blackrock Serpent obtained somewhere in the Underworld. I never found it. Any hints?

Background Dragon finally posted the information that confirmed the existence of the 'perfect serpent statue' in the Sewers of Castle Britannia.
There are three goblins trapped in the sewers by the Blackrock Gem. One of them (the one without a name) will respond to a hostile verbal approach, then a thaw in attitude with an offer to teach the Tracking skill. Later he will give you the Serpent, explaining that his tribe got it 50 years before from a dying man in the Serpent's Spine mountains. The man's last word was "Pagan." One question answered, and more arise in its place...

For the Curious, here is the Serpent:

Ultima VII Part 2: The Serpent Isle

The Serpent Isle

  'I Re-Ten Bentas Juxark I! Praetimde Mir-Wis Re-Por I'

They're also talking about someone called the False Prophet. WTF?

It be a reference to a time 200 years before, during the Gargoyle invasion of Britannia. Liberally translated the chant means "I have Virtue, protect me. Ancient wisdom of the Sea shall move me."

How do I use that jawbone? Every time I use it it just brings up a picture of it, but I wanna TELEPORT!

Have patience, have patience, don't be in such a hurry,
When you get impatient, you always start to worry.
Open the jawbone and put in all your teeth,
Then use the Serpent gate underneath thy feet.

There are a couple of places I can't get into. How do I get past the barrier into the central keep of Shamino's Castle, and how do I enter Skullcrusher?

Mr Clever Clogs eh? Either you're reading a walkthrough, or you've played through before. Either way you're forgetting something. Which incidently is what the Great Earth Serpent will tell you.

Thr problem is that YOU know what to do, but the AVATAR doesn't. To enter Shamino's Castle you must use the Hound of Doskar to track Cantra from her sword, and to enter Skullcrusher you need to track Batlin via his Fellowship Medallion, then get the password from the Gwani. If you neglect these steps then the Avatar doesn't know what to do next ingame.

Why won't the Summon Shade spell do anything to the Great Heirophant?

I assume you're trying to get the right cadaver to go wakie wakie? If not, keep looking. However you've probably forgotten the personal item you need. Any one or more out of the Serpent Armour, Serpent Crown, or Serpent Staff will do nicely.

Where's the Comb of Beauty? It's not in Columna's house.

No, but the key is in her cellar. She keeps it in a chest under a tree in her garden.

Ultima VIII: Pagan

Pagan

Which levers do I pull to open that gate in the cave to the Plateau?

You need to pull the ones across the bridge without bones in front. Should be obvious, as levers with bones probably killed the victim somehow. Then go back across the bridge and pull the lever in that little ruin to open the gate.

Daggers. Where are they kept? Somehow I don't think Mordea is going to give it to me giftwrapped with a bow, either pink or blue.

Have a chat to the servants. Maybe if Mordea was a little more reasonable in her treatment of them, they'd be a little more loyal.

What? Someone's lost their marbles. There's no way to open this gate.

If you're that annoyed by the marbles, throw them away. There's a nice platform across the gate that would make a reasonable target.

Ultima IX: Ascension

Ultima IX: Ascension

So when are they going to release this game anyway?

It's out. Whether it should have been released is another matter.

Is this really the last Ultima game?

It seems that Ultima IX: Ascension was the last official Ultima game. Electronic Arts has devoted considerable resources to developing two separate new Ultima MMORPGs, only to cancel both of them at apparently late stages of development as potential threats to the original Ultima Online. After the flop of U9:A and their track record with online development further Ultima games seem unlikely.
