A Solution to Ultima VI: The False Prophet

In the Beginning...

Your initial situation is a fight for your life in the Throne Room of Castle Britannia. You must kill the Gargoyles and then talk to Lord British. When you have answered his questions, ask him to heal you and about the Orb you are carrying in your inventory. Once you have spoken to Lord British, also chat with Nystul the Court Seer and with Sir Geoffrey. They both have useful information.

Your next order of business is to get equipped. Anything in the castle, except for the contents of the chest in Lord British's wardrobe, is free for the taking. The chamber immediately to the south of LB's is set aside for your use, and already has a supply of useful items, including a spellbook, reagents, and food.

If you want to get better equipment, you can buy the Dispel Field spell and get the book called "The Book of Lost Mantras" from the Lycaeum. Take this to the path west from Yew and agree to exchange it for gold. The Gold can be exchanged for coins at the Royal Mint in Britain. You will now have enough gold to equip yourself however you like. The best armour is for sale in Trinsic, but you'll have to search around for the good weapons, which are not for sale. You can also get a whole lot of spells to fill the blanks in the spellbook, but most are not really necessary.

Having done this, you should be ready for the next stage.

The Ensorcelled Shrines

After talking to Sir Geoffrey, you know that you should talk to Gertan, who is healing in Cove. Reacing Cove involves passing the Shrine of Compassion, which is guarded by the Gargoyle invaders. This should give you some idea of the peril faced by Britannia. Gertan will tell you that you need to use the Runes to negate the force fields placed on the shrines and get the stolen moonstones which the Gargoyles have placed upon each altar. You will also need to know the Mantra for each Virtue.

The Rune of Compassion is possessed by Arianna, a girl studying to be a Bard in Britain. She will give it to you if you get permission to borrow it from her mother. Her teacher Sir Kenneth knows the Mantra.

The Rune of Humility is held in trust by Lord Antonio of New Magincia. He will give it to whoever can tell him who is the most humble man in the village. This man is the only one who knows the Mantra of Humility.

The Rune of Honesty was buried in the catacombs beneath Moonglow with the man entrusted with it. Beyvin's cousin Manrel will give you the key to the tomb if you agree to take some flowers. Beyvin's lover, the Gypsy Penumbra can tell you the Mantra. She also can give you some information about your future.

The Rune of Honor is on a pedestal in the center of Trinsic. The Mayor, Lord Whitsabre, knows the Mantra.

The keeper of the Rune of Spirituality was murdered recently, but he hid the Rune in his daughter's hope chest. The Mantra is written in the Book of Spirituality, copies of which are scattered throughout the towne of Skara Brae.

The Rune of Valor is hidden behind a mousehole in the wall of the Sword and Keg tavern in Jhelom. The Mantra is easily learned, being in the songs sung by the patrons, but the Rune can be reached only with the help of Sherry, Lord British's talking mouse. Take some cheese before you try to recruit her.

The Rune of Justice was stolen from Yew by a thief named Boskin. If you talk to him, then check his story with Lady Lenora, you can get him to admit he's lying and tell you the location of the Rune. Lenora knows the Mantra of Justice, although she's more interested in the letter of the Law than Justice.

The Rune of Sacrifice is in the keeping of Selganor, the head of the Minoc Artesan's Guild. He will give it only to a member of the guild.
To join the guild, you need to get a log from Ben to the west of Yew. The log must be taken to Aaron at the sawmill in Minoc, who will cut it into a board. The board must be taken to the tinker Julia, also in Minoc, who will make some panpipes. Gwenno, who is usually in the Guild hall can tell you the notes of the song called Stones. If you take the pipes to Selganor, he will let you join the guild and give you the rune. The healer Tara can tell you the Mantra of Sacrifice.

Once you have one of the Runes and know the appropriate Mantra, you can free the Shrine associated with it. Note that the only Shrine which is not guarded by Gargoyles is the Shrine of Spirituality, which is best entered using the Orb. The best way of freeing the others is to use the Orb to reach the Shrine, use the Rune and Mantra to free it, then leave with the Orb again. Once the Shrine is freed the Gargoyles leave, so you can return to pick up the Moonstone without a fight.

Remember to hang onto the Moonstones, as they are needed later on, and are difficult to pick up if you place them on the ground.

Of the Mysterious Gargoyle Book

The Book should be taken to Mariah at the Lycaeum. She will tell you that she has part of a tablet which has similar writing, which she obtained from Gypsies, but would need the entire tablet to translate the book. Zoltan the Gypsy will tell you of how the Tablet was broken and stolen by Pirates, which means the trail leads to Buccanneer's Den. In this towne, Homer alone knows of the Tablet, but he will not speak save to a member of his own Guild, the Guild of Thieves.

To join the Guild of Thieves, you need to talk to Budo in his shop behind the King's Ransom Tavern. He will send you into the Britain sewers to seek out a woman named Phoenix, to take her Belt. It is not a good idea to try combat to get it, as she's equipped with glass swords. You should use a Pickpocket spell, obtained from Rudyom in Cove to get it. Once you have the belt, you can return to Budo in Buccanneer's Den.

Given that you are now a member of the Guild, Homer will tell you that the Tablet is in the treasure of Captain Hawkins and his crew of Pirates. There are nine pieces of map, and you must retrieve eight of them so that Homer will give you the ninth, and directions to the entrance to the caverns wherein the treasure is hidden.

In no particular order, the map pieces can be found as follows:
Ybarra in the depths of Dungeon Shame has a piece.
Heftimus lost his piece in the dungeon complex under Wrong and Covetous.
Hawknose took his piece with him when he went to kill Sin'Vraal in the Drylands, but the Giant Ants got him first.
Morchella of Serpent's Hold will swap hers for a magic shield.
Arturos the Gypsy stole a piece and will sell it for 50 gold.
The madman Bonn who lives north of the Shrine of Honesty has hidden his piece in his cellar.
One piece is in a wrecked ship west of Serpent's Hold.
The location of the eighth bit will be given by the cook Sandy in Trinsic, in return for a Dragon's Egg from Destard.

Once you have the other pieces, Homer will give you the last one, and give you directions to the point on the island shown where you need to dig to enter the Pirate Cave, provided you agree to return to him with the Storm Cloak. You need to take a shovel to open the entrance.

Within the Pirate Cave, you need to go west, avoiding the pits and go down a ladder guarded by a dragon. It helps to have a skiff, as there are four ladders, leading down to islands in an underground lake, and only one (the westernmost) is connected by a bridge. The next ladder down is hidden in the maze of passages with an entrance to the Southwest.

The third level of this cave system has numerous holes leading downwards. Most of them lead straight into lava pits in a daemon infested area with only one ladder back up. The correct hole is marked with a gold nugget nearby.

The worst obstacle on the final level is the entrance to the treasure chamber. There is no key, so you must open the door by other means. A powder keg, explosion spell, or magically locking then unlocking the door will all serve. Within the chamber lies a quantity of assorted treasure. Don't forget to take the Storm Cloak back to Homer.

With both the Tablet and Fragment, Mariah can translate the Book of Prophecy. She recommends that you talk to Sin'Vraal, the Daemon of the Drylands, who is in fact a Gargoyle. He will suggest that you need to talk to a Gargoyle Sage to learn the true meaning of the word Sacrifice. He also notes that only someone who can fly can reach the Shrine of Singularity.

Of the Gargoyle Kingdom

To learn of a way to end the Gargoyle attempts to sacrifice you, it is necessary to find a way to talk to them. The author of the Silver Plate, your friend Captain Johne, has made his home in the depths of Dungeon Hythloth, and has devoted his life to learning of the Gargoyle people. He has a vocabulary list that will allow you to speak to the Gargoyles in their own language.

Having learned the Gargoyle tongue, you should leave Hythloth through the entrance to the Gargoyle Kingdom. Outside is a young Gargoyle named Beh Lem, who will join you and take you to his father Valkadesh. Valkadesh can tell you how to gain acceptance among the Gargoyle people. When talking to Lord Draxinusom tell him you are willing to sacrifice yourself, and accept the Amulet of Submission. The Gargoyles will no longer attack you.

The Ancient Seer Naxatilor will tell you of the meanings of Sacrifice. The one meant be the Prophecy is of Items of Value - The Codex itesef! By giving up the Codex and placing it where both Britannians and Gargoyles have equal access to it, the need for the war is eliminated.

Naxatilor will send you to the Hall of Knowlege to read the Book of Ritual and retrieve the Vortex Lens. The Caretaker can tell you that another item, called the Vortex Cube was stolen by 'humans' and taken to Stonegate. You will be directed to take the lens to the Gargoyle Lensmaker Lor-Wis-Lem for repairs. Naxatilor will also tell you that you need a concave lens crafted by a human lensmaker, and that the exact ritual to return the Codex to the Vortex within the Ethereal Void will be written in the Codex itself.

The mage Ephemerides at the Lycaeum can create a lens from a glass sword. If you do not have one, he tells you that Dale the glassblower in Minoc can make one from three gems. Once the Britannian Lens has been created, don't put it down until you are ready to use it.

Having followed Naxatilor's instructions, it's now time to visit the Shrine of the Codex, on the Isle of the Avatar. Unfortunately the Guardians will not let you pass unless you are on a sacred quest. Bolesh, a Gargoyle troop leader, tells you that the forces protecting it in the past would allow someone on a Sacred Quest to pass, and that the Temple of Singularity would grant a petitioner the right to view the Codex. However the Shrine is within a mountainous valley that can only be entered from the air.

Of Flight Beneath the World

In the depths of the Lycaeum vaults lies a book called 'Ye Lost Art of Ballooning'. Within its pages a story is told of an artisan who created a balloon akin to that used by the Stranger during the Quest of the Avatar. In Minoc, Selganor will tell you that the balloonist was hired by Sutek, a mage living on an island east of Serpent's Hold.

Visiting Sutek is easier said than done. This once wise seer has moved into Blackthorn's castle and has taken up the practice of vivisection and creating animals with two heads, and usually a severe attitude problem. Once the outside beasts are defeated, the door to the Castle needs to be opened, using Explosion or a powder keg. A telekinesis spell is required to lower the drawbridge, and further access to the castle is through a secret door concealed behind the decorative sword and panel.

Once through Sutek's outer defenses, the inner ones should be simple to handle. Sutek himself is completely insane, but he does tell you that the ballonist's body is down in the catacombs beneath the castle, and to speak to his greatest creation, the PushmePullyu.

Down two levels, the PushmePullyu will give you a riddle. One head lies, the other is truthful, and both say that the other will tell you to go west. Thus you need to go east.
The plans to create a ballooon are on a body two more levels down. They detail the items you need to create the balloon.

Spider silk can be obtained from a mage, or collected from the Spider Cave south of Empath Abbey. Arbeth in Paws can spin it into silk, and Charlotte in New Magincia can weave the silk into a cloth. Marissa in Paws can sew it into a bag if shown the plans.

Rope is available from Mortude in Paws.

Michelle in Minoc can weave a large enough basket for the balloon fron the plans. She charges a large amount of gold for the service.

A cauldron for the fire can be found without stealing in the dungeons under Lost Hope Bay, Wrong and Covetous.

The ships anchor is not required for construction.

Once you have all of these, use the plans to create the balloon. Take it to the small path just east of the Slab of Sacrifice in the Gargoyle Kingdom, and use it. Change the wind so it comes from the south and get into the balloon. Fly over the mountains to reach the Shrine of Singularity. Get out of the balloon, and don't forget to pick it up.

You need to enter the Shrine and have a chat with the Altar of Singularity. It want's to know who you want the Codex for, which means you have to decide whether you want it for Britannia, the Gargoyles or for All people, regardless of race and species. Being the Avatar, that choice should be clear. Once you have answered correctly, the Altar sends you to the Shrines of the Gargoyle Principles, Control, Passion and Dilligence. Within the Shrines you are in for an interesting surprise...

In the Shrine of Control, your way is barred by a series of portculli and force fields. The following combination of levers and switches is required to pass. D and U signify the positions of Wall Switches, and R and L show the correct positions of levers set in the floor.

Within the Shrine, you must talk to the Statue, both about your old aquaintenceship and to learn of Control, both the meaning and the Mantra.

In the Shrine of Passion, you must walk across the lava and pass the Daemons to reach the Statue. Again the person was known to you, and can reveal something of her own mistakes and thus teach you of Passion, both the meaning to the Gargoyles ans the Mantra.

Finally the heart of the Shrine of Dilligence can be entered through a ladder behind a secret door two rooms south and one west of the entrance. The Shrine is guarded by Daemons, but the statue is of a third 'old friend' who will again be able to show you how to avoid his (its?) own mistakes in Dilligence.

Once you have spoken to all three statues and learned the three Mantras, you can deduce the Mantra of Singularity, by placing the three component mantras together in the order above. (Side Note: Using this method suggests the Mantra of Infinity is Veramocor. - Paulon) Tell this Mantra to the Altar of Singularity, and it will send you to the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom.

End Run!

Within the Shrine, the Codex is open to the correct page. You will discover that you lack the Vortex Cube, but wait! You know from the Caretaker that it was stolen and taken to Stonegate, and from the Compendium (you have read that haven't you?) that the Shadowlords used the Power of the Vortex to transport themselves from their fortress, by a strange coincidence, Stonegate. The connection is obvious.

The final quest is to journey by skiff south from Minoc to the southernmost part of the Bay of Lost Hope. Journeying further south from there, you will reach Stonegate, currently inhabited by two friendly Cyclops and their adopted human son. Bargaining with the male cyclops will allow you to exchange fish for a key needed deep within the cellars of the old Castle.

Do not take the obvious ladders down into the cellars. You first need to find the secret door at the center of the castle and descend the ladder behind it. You must use all the levers (under your parties big feet) to open the portculli in the other portion of the cellar. Go back up to the ground level and descend any of the ladders.

On this level, go down any of the ladders you find. On the next level though, you must go down the ladder in the chamber at the southwest of the level. The others take more spell casting to get about on the bottom level. Go down again and cast unlock magic to get through the door, and use the secret door to get at the lever to deactivate the force fields. Go into the northwest chamber and head through the secret door. Dispel the field and unlock the door with the key from the Cyclops. Enter the chamber, dispel the energy field, and get the Vortex Cube. Put all the moonstones into the Cube, and return to the Codex.

The Ritual

Put the Vortex Cube directly in front of the Codex. Put the Britannian lens between the Codex and the Flame of Infinity to the left. Put the Gargoyle Lens between the Codex and the Flame of Singularity to the right. When the lenses are correctly positioned, the light from the Flames will be visible.

Use the Vortex Cube, and end the War between Britannia and the Gargoyles.
